After all, the Coens used this script as a way of breaking out of the creative rut they found themselves in while working on Miller’s Crossing. While the directors have been clear in saying the film is not explicitly based on them, it’s hard to ignore the obvious parallels between them and Fink. In a lot of ways, the film mirrored the Coen Brothers’ experience working on Miller’s Crossing. And Jack Lipnick, the studio mogul in charge of Capital Pictures, was based on a number of Golden-Age Era Hollywood producers. The character of W.P Mayhew shares a number of similarities with novelist William Faulkner. Likewise, many of the other characters in the film were inspired by real-life counterparts. His tumultuous transition from playwriting to screenwriting was documented in his diary, and served as a huge inspiration for the Coens when creating the character. Kaufman, Fink himself was largely inspired by Clifford Odets, a 1930s political playwright from New York who moved to LA to write for the pictures after many of his Broadway plays failed to get produced. While the character’s iconic look is based on playwright George S. Joel and Ethan had been working closely with him while writing Miller’s Crossing, and wrote the role specifically for Turturro. This atmosphere was the creative engine driving the film.Īs for the lead role, John Turturro was their only choice from the start. They wanted Hotel Earle to feel like a “ghost ship,” whereby the signs of other passengers (or rather, residents) were visible, but they themselves were never seen. The film was to be set in a large and incredibly unsettling hotel located somewhere in Los Angeles, which was inspired by a hotel the brothers had seen while filming Blood Simple in Austin, Texas (“Motel Hell” is how they referred to it). Joel and Ethan Coen hopped on a flight back to New York City to write the script for Barton Fink.
